Elderly man suffering from GlaucomaGlaucoma Eye Examinations – How Often?

Having regular eye exams with an ophthalmologist is the only way to detect and treat glaucoma effectively. If you have any of the above symptoms , we recommend getting your eyes examined for glaucoma every 2 years, or every year if you are over the age of 64. We are happy to schedule an appointment for you to meet with our eye doctors, please fill out the form (below/beside) or call us at (773 777 4444) today.

Glaucoma Screening – What To Expect

Simply checking the pressure of the eyes does not give the eye doctor enough information as to how they can treat glaucoma. During a glaucoma evaluation, our eye doctor will measure eye pressure, inspect the efficiency of the eye drainage system, check the optic nerve for damage, and test the field of vision for each eye.

After checking these parameters and also talking to the patient about their personal symptoms, our eye doctors can properly diagnose your condition, or the conditions that you are likely to develop in the future. It is very important to schedule an eye exam with an ophthalmologist on a regular basis if you have a history of glaucoma in your family, or any of the criteria listed above.

Treatment Options for Glaucoma

Since there are various types of glaucoma, there are also various types of treatment. Typically our eye doctors will prescribe medication, in the form of eye drops, to control the condition. These eye drops will help the eye to maintain proper drainage and keep the eye’s pressure at a normal level. Some medications may give users side effects, it is important to follow up with the eye doctor after use, to find the best treatment possible.

In some cases, glaucoma can be treated with laser eye surgery. For open-angle glaucoma, the eye doctor will treat the drain of the eye, helping the eye to properly maintain a normal eye pressure. In closed-angle glaucoma, the eye doctor will create a hole in the iris to improve the flow of eye fluids, and maintain a normal eye pressure.
